Monday Nov 1

Day 36

Chem 112-Today we will go over combustion reactions . You will do the four questions that I gave you from the board and p 337 #20 and 21. You will complete the group work so that I can now mark it.

Chem 122-Today we will go over the five step process for predicting acid/base equilibria. This uses the Bronsted LOwry idea and the acid base table. I will give you a handout with questions of this type on it. I will finally get a chance to check your homework from last week. sheet 3 -table on strong acids and bases assigned last thursday and 6,8,9,12,13,14 from long sheet assigned last wednesday(you were also given some class time for this). You will receive a MAJOR assignment that is due this friday.

Chem 121-We will go over Hess's Law today. Please do 6,7,8,9 from the Ch 17 worksheet.

Tuesday Nov 2
Chem 112- Today we will go over the difference between empirical formula and molecular(true) formula. I did a homework check on friday and monday's work. We went over the hardest questions from friday and monday's work. I explained some information regarding the assignment that is due next monday. You will not be able to do the last thing required in Part Three of the assignment as we are doing solubility thursday.
Chem 122-Today we will go over another example of a five step question and from the homework I did #4 on the board. You are to complete the rest of this work for thursday. 1 to 8 from 5 step questions(you have already done 3 and 4). You received the assignment that is due next monday that involves Hess's Law and using the formation table. Hints: #1 is a Hess's Law question, #2 is a table of formation question and # 3 is a combination of both.
Chem 121-We will do finding enthalpy for a reaction by using the table of formation values. Please do #9 all. We will likely have a test on ch 17 next wednesday. The midterm will likely be the during the following week. The Midterm will cover Ch 22, 23 and 17

Chem 112-today we will go over how to use a solubility table. I will also outline the format of the midterm. You will finish any remaining pair work from earlier in the week. I did a demo showing two double replacement reactions and we did not get a chance to complete the work from earlier in the week.

Chem 122-Today we worked with Ka and Kb. We also learned about ICE problems. Hwk: p 610 #22 and #23 Assignment due: on monday nov 7 (bonus if completed for tomorrow)
Chem 121-We will work with reaction calculations where a reaction is providing energy for heating water in a hot water tank.. I also went over an example from the handout...#10a (ans. -3.35 GJ) and gave you time to do 11 b. in class. We will start candle mini lab. It is outlined on p 533(I believe I did not actually tell you which page in class).There will be Hess's Law quiz on monday. We will start some pair work from the blue booklet tomorrow.
You will receive an outline for next wednesday's test. Please remember that there are several practise questions at the end of the chapter. The pdf file for this is attached below.

Friday Nov 5


Chem 112- We will spend half of the class in groups of 3 to 4 people doing practise type questions for the midterm. I will also go over a selaed flask question. There is apractise question on the mole worksheet(top right by picture of the mole ) Please do #3 all.

Chem 121-We will also go over another energy calculation that is like a calorimeter calculation and a calculation where energy from a reaction is used find out energy produced for a certain amount of a substance. I will assign 10b and 13.(You will add 13 to your page). You will complete candle mini lab tomorrow. We will finish the pair work from the blue booklet.

#13. What amount ( mass) of methane undergoing complete combustion is required to heat 100.0 L of water from 5 degrees celsius to 70 degrees celsius? I assigned 27 to 33 on p 526 and p 531
